Weingart Partners for Maternal, Infant Health

Before the opening of the Martin Luther King, Jr. Community Hospital, more than half of the women in South Los Angeles had to travel far from their community to obtain the maternity care they need.

Now that has changed. With a generous grant of $750,000 to the new Martin Luther King, Jr. Community Hospital’s Healthy Babies, Healthy Beginnings initiative from the Weingart Foundation, more new mothers in the community have access to the compassionate, high-quality care they deserve.

Weingart has joined other major California foundations, including The Ralph M. Parsons Foundation, The California Endowment, and the David & Lucile Packard Foundation in supporting the hospital’s growth to 1,400 or more healthy births annually. Capacity for labor and delivery at the new hospital is supported by two dedicated operating rooms for C-sections, two floors of both delivery and postpartum beds, and two nurseries. Healthy Babies, Healthy Beginnings will also ensure that infants get a head start in life by offering infant care education and breastfeeding support to mothers.
